Special-Edition Toyota GR Supra Honors The Historic MkIV

The Gazoo Racing motorsports division of the Japanese automaker recently announced that its adored sports car will receive a 45th Anniversary Edition variant for the upcoming 2024 model year. The one-of-a-kind build is available in one of two special colors and features a large rear wing based on the MkIV, the most well-known Supra of all time.

After being absent from the market for nearly two decades, Toyota brought the Supra back for the 2020 model year. That meant it was too late to commemorate the nameplate’s 40th anniversary, as Car and Driver points out. However, the automaker seems determined not to miss another significant birthday. The brand has chosen to pay tribute to the car’s iconic fourth iteration, the MkIV, to ensure that this milestone is never forgotten. You may be familiar with the MkIV because it is the vehicle that Paul Walker’s Brian O’Connor drives in The Fast and the Furious.

Although the manufacturer does not explicitly state this—it only mentions that the car is similar to the MkIV of “big screen fame”—it is evident that the new variant was influenced by Brian’s Supra. The 45th Commemoration Release comes in one of two tones — Mikan Impact orange or Outright Zero white. Both look great, but we think most fans will go with the first choice. The car comes with an adjustable oversized rear wing, black “Supra” side graphics, black brake calipers, and a set of matte-black 19-inch wheels in addition to the exclusive finishes. The combination of the changes gives the already bold Supra a sportier appearance than it has ever had since its triumphant return.

Although the 45th Anniversary Edition is essentially a deluxe design package, it is unlikely that many fans will care. This is due to the fact that the vehicle is still powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six from BMW, which is also found in all other 3.0 Supra models. The mill is available with either an eight-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission that can produce 382 horses and 368 ft lbs of twist and send power to the rear axle.

The variant, which is scheduled to go on sale later this fall, will only be produced in quantities of 900, according to Toyota. The GR Supra 45th Anniversary Edition’s price has not been disclosed, but we anticipate it to be significantly higher than the $53,600 starting price of the 3.0 model.
